“Migrating to Azure – A Real World Project”

This presentation came about after a real-world migration from an on-premise environment with a full forklift to Azure utilizing a variety of SQL products, from SQL Database, Managed Instance and classic VM’s.  This focuses primarily on Managed Instances as they are both the newer product as well as where the primary application’s database resides.

We will cover everything from planning stages, discussing strategies for data migration, high availability, security, backups and more, as well as lessons learned after we went live in the cloud.  As of the time of the presentation, we will have been live in Azure for about 2 months.

About the Presenter

Jonathan Fite is a database administrator and has been working on databases since SQL 2005.  Throughout his rather unremarkable career, he has done systems administration, user support, application development, consulting and bakes a completely edible loaf of sourdough.  His most recent challenges have been migrating the entire database stack to the cloud and then paying off some of that technical debt, because suddenly there is a hard cost to needing that much memory.
